Assalaamu Alaykum,

During this holy month of Ramadan, we take the time to reconnect with Allah SWT. This particularly odd time presents new challenges as the first year without the traditional Taraweeh prayer.

For others, such as breastfeeding or pregnant women, this may be the first year you’re unable to fast. While consulting a healthcare provider is strongly recommended, the decision is ultimately yours. Most scholars agree that if it is in the best interest of you and your baby, you are exempt from fasting until it is safe to do so.

While there are some differences in the schools of thought regarding how to make up your fasts, most scholars believe that you must make up the fast for every day that is missed. If you are unable to fast for more than one Ramadan, you may make up the fasts by giving fidya.

In the case that you are healthy and are electing to fast this month, ensure you are getting enough water during suhoor and iftar. Research has shown that women who exclusively breastfeed and are fasting may become dehydrated. It is also essential to receive the essential nutrients outlined by your healthcare provider during this time. Supplementing with vitamins, such as Vitamin D, may be helpful. It is highly recommended that a healthcare provider is consulted before taking any vitamins or supplements.

Islam encourages all Muslims to prioritize their health and wellbeing first and foremost; difficult circumstances exempt all Muslims from fasting to prevent undue burden or hardship.

Birth Mark wishes all of our Muslim clients a Ramadan Mubaark. May this Ramadan bring you much peace, joy, and happiness in this blessed month.
