What are my abortion options?
Abortion options in Canada include medication abortion and procedural (surgical/in-clinic) abortion.
Medication abortion uses a combination of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol (Myfegymiso). It is typically available for up to 9-11 weeks depending on the provider.
Procedural abortion involves a quick in-clinic procedure using dilation and suction to empty the uterus. While this type of abortion is often called surgical abortion, there are no incisions or stitches involved and you’ll leave soon after your procedure. It may be available for up to 24 weeks depending on the provider and clinic. Additional appointments and time may be needed based on how many weeks pregnant you are for cervical dilation before a procedure.
Choice in Health clinic provides short videos describing medication and procedural abortion in more detail on their website. Each provider’s options will vary slightly so we encourage you to contact the clinic you plan to go to for more specific information.
Induction abortion involves medications to end a pregnancy and induce labour, typically in pregnancies after 24 weeks. Induction may also be used in pregnancy losses after 20 weeks or pregnancy termination for medical reasons (TFMR). It is only available in a hospital setting where continuous monitoring is possible. Travel to the U.S. may be required for abortions after 24 weeks.
My gestational age (number of weeks of the pregnancy) is past the number of weeks that abortion is offered in my area. What can I do?
